Botanical Name: Acer rubric
Common Name: Red Maple
Height: 40-70 ft; Width 30-50 ft. Moderate growth
Easily grown in average, medium to wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Tolerant of a wide range of soils, but prefers moist, slightly acid conditions. Very cold hardy.
Red flowers in dense clusters in late March to early April (before the leaves appear), red fruit (initially reddish), reddish stems and twigs, red buds, and, in the fall, excellent orange-red foliage color.
This is a deciduous woody plant which loses its leaves in the winter. By late September this plant may have brown or discolored leaves with some leaf loss. This is normal in the plant’s life cycle and not a sign of damage or an unhealthy plant. Even though this plant may not have green foliage, fall is still the best time of year to plant deciduous trees and shrubs.
