The ‘White by the Gate’ Camellia is one of the purest white flowers available. The blooms are formal, large and flat when fully open and set off by the rich-green, glossy foliage of the bush. This is a medium-sized evergreen, around 10 feet tall and 6 or 8 feet wide. It looks perfect almost anywhere in the garden, especially as a graceful specimen, clad in white, standing in a shady lawn, by a doorway, or, of course, by the gate. It is also perfect for growing with other acid-loving plants in a woodland setting, with gardenias, azaleas, and Japanese Maples.
Camellias prefer an acidic, humus rich soil with an organic mulch and average moisture. Once well-established they need little additional care and will continue to perform for years to come. Most Camellias do best where they get light shade or morning sun and the light filtered shade of pines seems to be perfect.
