This is a deciduous woody plant which loses its leaves in the winter. By late September this plant may have brown or discolored leaves with some leaf loss. This is normal in the plant’s life cycle and not a sign of damage or an unhealthy plant. Even though this plant may not have green foliage, fall is still the best time of year to plant deciduous trees and shrubs.

Ruby Falls Redbud is a small size weeping tree. The lavender blooms last for a few weeks and appear before the foliage. Then the heart shaped maroon red leaves make their appearance  close to the center of the tree.

As summer approaches, the red foliage changes colors turning into shades of dark green with purplish streaks. These purple stripes on the leaves will stick around throughout the entire season and will even be there during fall, only tapering off when the colder winter temperatures arrive. The Ruby Falls Redbud is a product North Carolina State University developed in 2009.
